Statement Issued on Pope Benedict
Statement of the Interreligious Council of San AntonioThe Interreligious Council of San Antonio is profoundly concerned about the recent words of Pope Benedict at Regensburg, words that may harm Islam, Christianity, and the Pope himself in the eyes of others. It strongly regrets that there were intemperate responses on all sides before clarification could occur, responses particularly harmful at this time of religious tension.
It is necessary that calming words be used and actions taken at this time by religious leaders, and desirable that the Pope should lead this process by reaching out to Islamic leaders in love and respect.
No religion can claim exemption from blame for the use of violence at times in its history and none can point a finger at others. But now, when nations and religions are drawn more closely together, it is essential that all strive to recognize the qualities in others without bias and misinterpretation.
The Council hopes that this event will lead to more dialogue and open communication between peoples of different faiths.
