Interreligious Council Meeting June 8, 2009
Ken Southwood has agreed to lead a discussion on “Modern Secular Scholarship on the Christian Gospels.” He will describe the four gospels and Marcus Borg’s account of recent scholarship in secular rather than theological institutions in his Jesus in Contemporary Scholarship. This casts doubt on the historical truth of much Christian belief in Jesus' life. In his own work he describes Jesus as a “God-intoxicated Jew,” teacher of alternative wisdom and compassion subversive of conventional wisdom based on reward and punishment. This is the third of possible ongoing presentations by Council members of aspects of their religions. Jan Puckett made a presentation of aspects of Buddhism in December, and Jewish members did a Seder focused on child nutrition at our April meeting.
